Excellent Reviews of the Product : Sony DCR-DVD105 DVD Handycam Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom
I have to say that I've been tremendously impressed with the reviews of (especially) this product after owning it for a brief period just to check the Sony DCR-DVD105 Handycam myself: it's a great "first" camcorder for the novices -- especially if you're not looking for crystal clear high quality images -- but that's saying about all you can. The features -- the 20x Optical Zoom, onscreen programming, etc. -- are all terrific, and, at a glance with a reasonably informed sales associate -- you might think you're getting a camera that'll make you the next Steven Spielberg, but, truth be told, you won't even end up as a Russ Myer (sp?). The images are less than one megapixel, and they're strained and grainy. While the photos burned to the MiniDVD are Windows compatible, the video isn't, and I had tremendous difficult getting the Nero software to keep my Windows XP from crashing (according to Nero, this was due to other software I had installed but not running on Windows). The camcorder has no ability to interface with a computer, so viewing your video footage is only possible through one burned movie OR hooking a DVD player up to your TV card via computer in order to capture the video a second time, at which point you can do some modest editing.
Don't get me wrong: the 105 is a great camera for beginnings OR for folks who are looking to get their feet wet through experimenting and planning to upgrade at some point in the near future. Sony makes some great products, and, after a week of trial use, I immediately went out and exchanged the 105 on the vastly superior DCR-DVD405, which is a truly awesome camera. I just felt it highly relevant to post a quick review here stating that most of the folks who've contributed to these Amazon reviews TRULY are helpful and know what they're talking about, especially from a consumer perspective. Had I spent more time researching my initial decision here, I probably would've went for the Sony 405 right away, but, dollars to doughnuts, the 105 is a nice first camera.

Very happy with this! : Canon VIXIA HF R20 Full HD Camcorder with 8GB Internal Flash Memory (Black)
I am legitimately happy with my new camera. I am a pro musician and PhD Music student, and I purchased this for self-study to record performances, rehearsals, and convention sessions. Of special note are its *very* easy upload capabilities, specifically to Mac computers. I found that reviewing the other cameras, no one talked about Mac compatibility or not!
Sound capability is terrific, especially for complex classical music played at a very high level. Weight terrific, easy to get started with it. I have to get more acquainted with other things it does.

Sony Hdr-Cx160 great ground camcorder : Sony HDR-CX160 High-Definition Handycam Camcorder (Black)
I've owned and tested a new Sony Cx series camcorder each year since the Cx7. I'm very impressed with the Sony Cx160 for ground footage. Testing it the other night when my friends rode bulls for the first time ("Dysfunctional Bull Riding" on youtube) I was impressed on the active steadyshot being able to minimize my hand held shaking while the camera was heavily zoomed in. The low lux made the above video super animated even in a dark arena. The external mic is nice to have back on a consumer level Cx series camera. I personally don't like the built in Usb cable since I tend to mount my cameras in boxes and helmets but for the median joe, it's nice not to look for a Usb cable. The other plus with this camera is you can now payment straight through this cable. Therefore a thorough Usb charger port in your car or computer can payment the camera. This takes longer than the thorough Sony charger but nice in a pinch. I've noticed the Usb downloading speeds are very slow in this camera. It takes a exiguous or so to download a 200mb clip from internal memory. You also can not run the footage straight off the camera like you could with the 150.
Speaking of footage. The potential out of this camera is awesome! I'm super impressed by the image quality.
I dropped this down by a point since I use these cameras for skydiving and the optical stabilization (Ois) causes flap when the camera is in a vacuum caused by certain body positions. I could see this being an issue with people mounting these in certain positions on motorcycles or other fast animated vehicles where there is not laminar airflow around the camera. (youtube "Sony Hdr-Cx160 Tests"). Sony needs to lock the stabilization optics when the stabilization is turned off!
Overall I'm going to keep this camera for ground footage but going back to my Eis based Sony Hdr-Cx150 camera for ultimate sports.
